When a child is told "you couldn't have done this"

In the oral defence at a science competition, the more completely a child explains their research, the more likely they are to be met with doubt rather than curiosity. The pattern has causes, and the judges aren't simply to blame — but the cost lands almost entirely on the most committed students. And there is something that can be prepared for in advance, starting far earlier than most people do.

Across years of guiding students through research and sitting through competition rooms, we've noticed a pattern that rarely gets discussed: the more completely a child explains their research, the more likely they are to be suspected of not having done it.

To be clear about what this is and isn't: we are not accusing any particular competition or any particular judge, and we won't be recounting any individual case. This reads more like a structural side effect — and it's worth asking who ends up paying for it.

What one sentence teaches a child

An oral defence is short. A judge has perhaps fifteen or twenty minutes to decide who really produced a body of work that took months, sometimes years.

When a child answers steadily across hypothesis, experimental design and data interpretation — even pace, clear structure, more assured than people expect at that age — the judge is left with only two readings. Either this child genuinely walked the whole path, or somebody walked it for them.

"You couldn't have done this." We have heard that sentence more than once. The child doesn't argue back in the moment. They simply go quiet.

The question is what they take away from it. Ideally they'd learn I need to explain my process more clearly. In practice, a lot of children learn something else: performing too well carries risk. And so they start dialling themselves down — describing the research more shallowly, understating their own role, making themselves look less unusual.

A child beginning to conceal what they actually know is the outcome we least want to see.

Where the suspicion comes from

The judges aren't simply to blame here.

Science competitions in Taiwan have long carried a suspicion that adults do the work for the students. That suspicion didn't appear out of nowhere, and judges have reason to be alert to it; a process that never verified anything would be still more unfair to the children who did the work honestly. It's also one of the reasons we never publish a winners' list — we mentor, we don't do it for them, and any list that turns a student's result into an institution's signboard deepens the suspicion a little further.

The problem is the means of verification. Very little evidence is available in the room: a judge can see the finished work, but not the process behind it. And it is precisely the children who went deepest and furthest whose finished work looks least like what that age is "supposed" to produce. So the cost of that vigilance falls on the people least equipped to bear it.

This isn't anyone's ill will. It's the error a judgement structure inevitably produces when it has no access to process.

Keep the process — and start keeping it early

We can't change how competitions are judged. What we can do is make the process itself something that can be examined — and it has to be captured while the research is happening, not reconstructed afterwards.

Three things in particular:

  • Start the research log on day one. Record what was tried each time, where it failed, and why the next step was chosen. We cover the method in more detail in the engineering notebook.
  • Keep the failed versions. A folder containing nothing but clean results is, paradoxically, the least convincing thing a student can hand over. The dead ends are the evidence that the work belongs to the child.
  • Make the child do the explaining. From very early on, ask them to talk through the whole arc in their own words. Wherever it comes out muddled is where they don't yet genuinely understand it — which improves the research quite apart from anything else.

None of this is defensive paperwork. It's what research is supposed to look like anyway. It also happens to be the only ground a child can stand on when they're doubted.

And finally, what to say to the child

Beforehand: if the judges ask you a lot of questions, it usually means they think your work carries weight and is worth probing. Don't panic.

Afterwards: one moment of doubt does not define what you spent these years doing. You know how every one of those data points was produced, and so do the people who worked alongside you. This will hurt for a while, and it changes nothing about the capacity you've already built — going from unable to speak up at all, to explaining your own research in full to a stranger. There's no shortcut down that road, and no faking it.
