Senior High Edition · Grades 10–12

Today’s exams are nothing like the ones we took

Today’s exams reward reading data and judging experiments, not memorization. These two books train exactly that.

Background: original pages from the 2025 and 2026 GSAT Science papers

On GSAT Science and AST Chemistry and Biology questions about variables

47.5%

is the average share of points lost.

Across 12 variable questions from 2022 to 2026, test-takers lost nearly half of the available points on average. At senior high level, working out what an experiment actually changed and what it measured still trips up a great many students.

§ 01

Where it goes wrongThe Mismatch

Plenty of practice, pointed the wrong way

When science scores stall, the first thought is usually effort. But lay five years of exams side by side, and the issue is rarely how much students practice. It is whether they practice the right skills.

Original 2026 AST Chemistry question 23 (in Chinese): a student wants to find the rate constant for the formation of product A at 37°C and must pick two of six experimental setups in Table 4 to compare. Table 4 lists the volumes of ONPG solution, lactase solution and buffer for each setup, and the measurement time after sodium carbonate is added.
2026 AST Chemistry, question 23, screenshot of the original paper (in Chinese). Choose two of six setups to compare, and only one condition may differ. Nationwide, test-takers earned just 20% of the points on this question.

Review books are not wrong. They just skip this part

Review books cover concepts and calculation well. But judging experiments and controlling variables? No material is dedicated to training it.

What to trainTwo Skills, Two Books

The missing piece is two skills

Making sense of unfamiliar science material is one skill. Judging whether an experiment was done right is another. We gave each its own book, so each can go deep, and there are English books too.

Book one

Unlock Science Reading (解鎖科閱力)

Trains understanding

50 long-form science articles, 5 questions each. Faced with science material they have never read, students learn to find the key points, read the graphs and draw conclusions. This is the book for the many graph and data questions on the GSAT and AST.

Unlock Inquiry 2027 Edition cover

2027 Edition cover

Book two

Unlock Inquiry (解鎖探究力)

Trains judgment

A whole book devoted to one thing: understanding experiments, evaluating designs, weighing evidence. Variables, control groups, whether a conclusion holds up. This is the book for the variable and experimental-design questions the GSAT and AST keep returning to.

Science topics, written for English reading

About 1 in 4 reading passages on the GSAT English paper is about scientific research. The English books have their own articles and questions, written in English for long-form reading practice; the science gives students a reason to read to the end. Science for depth, English for breadth: 2 + 2, all in one.

  • No need for the full setStudents who can’t get through long texts can start with Unlock Science Reading; those who stumble on experiments and variables, with Unlock Inquiry.
  • Accessible at any levelThe 50 units start with short passages, and the answer to each first question is in the text. Students score first, then climb.
  • Useful for school exams tooSchool midterms and monthly exams now often include graph-reading and experiment questions. What students practice here pays off there as well.

§ 03

Unlock Inquiry · How the distractors are builtMisconceptions

Built on national exam data, aimed at real weak spots

The CEEC publishes the accuracy rate for every question, along with how the top and bottom thirds of test-takers answered. That data puts a number on how students go wrong.

Unlock Inquiry is designed to hit those weak spots

The official data shows exactly how students go wrong. We take the misconceptions that draw the most test-takers and turn them into wrong options. Fall into these traps at home, and they won’t catch you on exam day.

§ 04

Unlock Science Reading · Exam formatSame Layout

Font size, page layout and graph style all follow the GSAT and AST papers.

Graphs Drawn like the exam

What they practice is what they will see on exam day

Every day, students work with the exam’s type, the exam’s layout, the exam’s graphs. Once it feels familiar, exam day feels calmer, and all their energy goes into the questions.

§ 05

Built into both booksDiagnosis

Wrong, and knowing why

Copying the right answer is not the same as correcting a mistake. So we built diagnosis into the structure of the questions.

Unlock Science Reading: 5 questions per unit, one skill per question

  1. Skill trained: Comprehension

    01

    Comprehension

The answer is right there in the text. A first point on the board, every time.

  2. Skill trained: Applying concepts

    02

    Applying concepts

Taking a principle from the textbook into a situation they have never seen.

  3. Skill trained: Reading graphs & tables

    03

    Reading graphs & tables

Seeing the relationships the numbers imply but never state.

  4. Skill trained: Evaluating inquiry

    04

    Evaluating inquiry

Is the experiment well designed? Does the conclusion hold up?

  5. Skill trained: Stretch

    05

    Stretch

Pulling ideas together across paragraphs, or explaining the reasoning behind an answer.

Every question is labeled with the skill it trains

A wrong answer points straight to a skill. Missing evaluating-inquiry questions three units in a row means that skill needs work. Three units give you three data points, with no separate test needed. Unlock Inquiry works the same way: every question maps to one of six inquiry skills.

    § 06

Why the books work as a pairCross-Subject

    These skills reach beyond science

We also went through all 87 reading sets on the 2022–2026 GSAT Chinese and English papers. In English, about 1 in 4 is about scientific research, and they appear on the Chinese paper too. Science has long since spread beyond the science paper.

How the Chinese paper tests it

The passage covers ecological research after wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone, and newer studies that challenge the earlier account. The question asks how the words of three scholars support the argument: a scientific-argumentation question.

Original 2023 GSAT Chinese questions 8–9 (in Chinese): a passage on ecological change in Yellowstone after gray wolves were reintroduced in 1995, and post-2010 research questioning the claim that wolves saved the rivers. The questions ask which sentence best fills a blank and how the words of three scholars are used.
2023 GSAT Chinese, questions 8–9, screenshot of the original paper (in Chinese).

How the English paper tests it

The passage reports research on retina regeneration in zebrafish: what happens when GABA is lowered, and the next step of testing it in mice. One question asks which sentence is an opinion rather than a fact: a scientific-inquiry question.

Original 2022 GSAT English questions 43–46: a passage on zebrafish self-repair and Vanderbilt University research finding that lowering GABA levels can trigger retina regeneration, to be tested next in mice. The questions ask for the main idea, the role of GABA, the meaning of replicated, and which sentence is an opinion rather than a fact.
2022 GSAT English, questions 43–46, screenshot of the original paper.

    One skill set, three subjects

Unlock Science Reading trains understanding; Unlock Inquiry trains judgment. Science, Chinese and English all test both. That is why the books are designed as a set, and why we made the English books.

    QuestionsFAQ

    Things you might ask

    QHow are the questions written?

    Every question passes five checks:

    • Difficulty is calibrated to the official GSAT and AST accuracy and discrimination statistics, with no obscure trick questions.
    • Each question trains a single skill, so a wrong answer shows exactly where your child is stuck.
    • Graph questions can only be answered by actually reading the graph.
    • Wrong options are built from the misconceptions test-takers fall for most often. Meet them once at home, and they are easy to spot on exam day.
    • Worked solutions explain not only why the answer is right, but why the wrong ones are tempting.
QWhy are the questions and graphs in black and white?

Because the GSAT and AST papers are printed in black and white.

    • Students used to reading graphs by color often lose a step on exam day.
    • The questions and graphs in the books are deliberately made to match the real papers.
    • The way they practice is the way they will answer.
QHow does this relate to school exams?

    Closely:

    • School midterms and monthly exams increasingly include graph-reading and experiment questions.
    • The skills these two books build carry straight over to school exams.
    • They are not chapter-by-chapter test prep. They build the skills that the GSAT, the AST and school exams all test.
QWhat if my child’s foundation is still shaky?

    They can still keep up:

    • The 50 units begin with short passages, and the questions in each unit build from easy to hard.
    • Answers to the early questions can be found in the text or graph, so students score first and build confidence.
    • Later questions lead step by step into inference and judgment.
QWhat data is recorded when we scan the QR code?

    Very little:

    • Only the answers this LINE account chose for each unit.
    • Over time, these answers build into an analysis of weak spots, showing which kinds of questions your child gets stuck on.
    • No name, school or phone number is required.
QDo I need both books, or can I buy just one?

One is fine. The two books train two sides of the same skill set:

    • Unlock Science Reading: understanding long science texts. A natural starting point for students who struggle to finish long passages.
    • Unlock Inquiry: judging experiments and evidence. A natural starting point for students who lose points on experiment and variable questions.
    • Together, they cover both reading and judgment.
QIs the English book a translation of the science book?

No. They are two different books:

    • Science: science reading and experiment reasoning in Chinese, aligned with the GSAT and AST science test
    • English: separate articles and questions written in English, on science topics, for long-form English reading
    • Not a translation and not bilingual side by side; each can be bought on its own or used together
    • During the Super Early Bird period, buying a science book brings the English book with the same title free, for example science Unlock Science Reading with English Unlock Science Reading

    The exams have changed.
    Practice should change with them.
