Is my child really that bad at maths? First check whether they're writing anything down

For most children who stall in maths, the problem isn't understanding — it's rushing through mental arithmetic and skipping steps. With no working on the page, mistakes can't be found and checking is hopeless. Writing it out looks slower. It is the fastest route there is.

Every year we take on a few children who are "struggling with maths." The parents almost always open with the same sentence: is my child really that bad at this?

Most of the time, no. The problem isn't in their head. It's in their pen.

Busy being fast, forgetting to be right

Plenty of children do maths homework entirely in their head, or write down the answer and nothing else. It saves time in the moment. The bill arrives on the exam paper.

Without the steps written out, the error rate goes up on its own. Worse, when something does go wrong, there's no way to find it. The page holds an answer and no reasoning, so checking is guesswork — the only option is to redo the whole question. Redo it, get it wrong again, and the child starts to conclude they simply can't do maths. The frustration stacks up, and eventually it hardens into fear.

That's how "careless" quietly becomes "bad at maths." The distance between those two things is often a single line of working.

What writing it out actually buys you

The habit of laying out every step is the foundation of maths, and of the sciences after it. It does three jobs at once.

It clarifies thinking. Writing each step in order forces the child to know what they're solving and why they're solving it that way. Many children aren't incapable — they start writing while the problem is still a blur.

It cuts mistakes. Skipped steps are the single biggest source of careless errors. Write every step and the errors thin out by themselves.

It makes checking possible. With the process laid out, the mistake is visible at a glance. The difference isn't marginal: a child with working checks a question in seconds, while a child without one has to solve it again from scratch.

How to build the habit

Start at basic arithmetic. Don't wait for hard problems. Elementary addition and subtraction are the ideal place to begin — each line of working is one complete pass of thinking, written down. Build the habit there and you've built the foundation of how they learn everything else.

Let the child do the maths on whether it's worth it. Lecturing rarely works. Showing them the numbers does. Take a marked exam paper and ask them to redo the wrong questions properly, with full working. Most children discover two things: it's actually faster, because they aren't re-solving the same question three times, and their accuracy jumps. Then add those marks back onto the total and let them see where it would have put them in the class ranking.

That gap in ranking is more persuasive than any lecture. The child reaches the conclusion themselves: writing it out pays.

Make every improvement visible. When they start working through the steps, say so clearly — and over the top is fine. They need to know their parents are genuinely pleased about the change, and to feel pleased about it themselves. Habits grow on positive feedback, not on correction.

In maths, slower is faster

Maths has never been a speed contest. It's a contest of logical, complete thinking. Once a child writes out full working as a matter of course, what improves isn't only the grade — it's the clarity of their thinking, and that's the part that carries them further.

So when parents ask us how to choose a maths teacher, our answer is always the same: find one who insists on properly written working and doesn't chase shortcuts.

Thinking about maths with both feet on the ground is the one approach on this road that never stops working.
